CONQUERING THE AIR.
FARMAN'S AEROPLANE.
Received July 7, 10.20 p.m. LONDON, July 7. Farman's aeroplane flew in L'aris 11 miles in 20min 20sec, winning the Armengard prize of 10,000 francs. M. Farman recently made a wonderful flight in Paris in his new areoplane by travelling 850 yards, or nearly half a mile, in 53sec. He accomplished the feat on the military parade ground at Issy, and describing it a London correspondent wrote: "The onlookers cheered themselves hoarse as the great machine, without gas-bfg or any balloon-like appendage, rushed along the ground, and then rose gradually into the air. The ground was very muddy, and at first it was feared that the wheels of the aeroplane would stick in the ruts. But the immense unwieldy-looking thing rushed quite lightly over 250 yards of ground, and then skimmed upwards, driven by its 50 horsepower motor, as gracefully as a bird. It gently rose and fell, keeping at a distance of from 4ft to 15ft above the earth, and came to the ground again quite lightly and under the most prefect control."
