COSTUME FOOTBALL MATCH.
BUTCHERS AND BAKFRS.
The annual football fixture, butchers v. bakers, took place on the Masferton Showgrounds, yesterday/when the pffair took the form of a costume match, played in aid of the funds of the St. John Ambulance Qorps. The participants in the fray marched to the arena through the main streets of the town headed by the Maatorton Municipal Band. The match itself was full of exciting play, and after a very hard-fought game the butchers won by three pointb (a penalty goal, kicked by A. A. Narby) to nil. Th«* winner.-?, therefore, retain for the year the Cup, presented for competition between the two trades by the Master Bakers and Master Butchers' Association. Last year the bucthera won by 14 points to nil. In the evening a very pleasant re-union was held by the two trades in the Foresters' Hall Mr J. Wickena occupied the chair. A long list of toasts was honoured, and a lengthy programme of vocal items rendered. During the evening Mr J. McGillicuddy announced that _ ho intended to present for competition between the butchers and bakers teams, next year, a cup to bo won outright. The announcement was greeted with loud applause. The gathering terminated at a late hour with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
