INTRIGUES AT KABUL.

Dr. V. Winter (a lady) who was for two years confidential physician at the Afghan Court, and left Kabul as recently as last February, has made an interesting statement to Reuter's Agency, regarding the attitude of the Ameer towards Great Britain, and the difficult position he has to fill as ruler of a people opposed to the British. The Ameer, declares Dr. Winter, has a great liking for Great Britain, and this feeling has increased since he visited India. The Ameer is described as neing quite in favour of the Anglo-Russian agreement, which he would have signed long ago, had it had not been for the pressure pu*; on him from outside. On one occasion, when discussing the question of a railway connecting with India, he said that he was wholly in f avou** of the project, but he added pathetically: "Unfortunately, I'm only one man." According to Dr. Winter, this is the crux of the matter. The Ameer, in his liking for the British and his desire to be on friendly terms with them is opposed by his brother, Nasrullah Khan, and the majority of his subjects. There has been unrest in Kabul for some time, and the Ameer has been worried into ill-health by the intrigues going on round him. Nasrullah Khan ta lb." l~y.hr i:: Vv« plotting, "P:ir.c<3 N'.-i/u'l-ih it. playii. b a Very tkcp gam;;, which has for its object the downfall of the Ameer," says Dr. Winter,"and there is little doubt that he i* his best to get the Ameer into trouble with the Indian Government. That this policy is anti-British is a fact to which those who have had such unique opportunities as I have had in Kabul cannot close their eyes."
