THEFT BY A FOOTMAN.
AUCKLAND June 12. Frederick Sherlock Jones, who had been ten months employed as third footman by Lord Plunket, was charg--2d at the Police Court wit'i theft of cheques, cash, and clothing, the property of Captains Lyon and Hardy, A.D.C.'s, amounting to about £6O. Captain Lyon had placed an envelope containing cheques for £44 and 10s, and about £8 15s in gold and silver, in a drawer. He subsequently discovered that the money was missing. Further investigation showed that a .quantity of clothing belonging to Captains Hardy and Lyon was also missing. Jones confessed to the theft, and handed over £8 15s, but stated that he had torn up the cheques and thrown them away. He also admitted having stolen £lO from the butk-r's office in April iaut. He made a clean breast of the affair, and was commit'ed for trial at the Supreme Court.
