PERSONAL.

Mr T. Hutchins has been appointed Deputy Registrar of Births, Daaths and Marriages at Maunceville. Mrs J. Strang, of Gladstone, and her two daughters have left on a visit to Sydney. They intend to be absent about six weeks. A visit ia being paid to Masterton by Mr F. S. Firhy, Inspector of Telegraphs, in connection with the proposed erection of a telephone line from Masterton to Mount Bruce. Mr E. A. Farrington, late of the Auckland branch of the Stock Department, who has been appointed to the Masterton branch, arrived in Masterton yesterday, and will commence his duties on Monday. Mr V. A. Mills will leave for Dunedin brunch on Monday. Mr H. C. Christie, appointed rabbit agent at Featherpton, was in Masterton yesterday, en route to hia new district. Captain S. B. Hdford, of the Union Company's Whangape, died at Wellington, yesterday morning, after an illness which had confined him to the hospital for some weeks. Tha deceased, who was a son of Captain Holford, for many years Harbour Master <it New Plymouth, had been in the Union Company's service about fil'tom years, during which time he had commanded the steamers Wliangape, Takapuna, Fateena and other biata. He was particularly well known on the West Coast of both Islands. Tho deceased, who was 43 years of age, leaves a wife and one son to mourn their loss.
