BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY IMPROVEMENTS.
REPORT OF BOROUGH COUNCIL COMMITTEE. MR LAING - MEASON'S NO. 1 SCHEME ADOPTED. The Borough Council had before it last night the report of a select committee set up to report on the two schemes supplied to the Council by Messrs D. Dobson and G. LaingMeason in regard *o the improvement of the water supply of the Borough. The report read as follows: — "At an adjourned meeting of the Select Committee, consisting of Crs Elliott, Haughey, Ewington, Hunter, Pauling and Pragnell, appointed to report upon the question of the water supply of the Borough, held at the Council Chambers, the Chairman (Cr Hunter) outlined the steps taken by the Committee to form the basis of a report on this subject, and after a full and free discussion, the evident feeling of the Committee was that to execute any works beyond that outlined in Mr Laing-Meason's report on page 7 —i.e., the whole of Scheme No. I—is at present unnecessary. The Committee, moreover, are satisfied that whtn the works outlined in Scheme 1, and described as "A," carried to completion, there will be an abundance of water more than sufficient to supply the present or near future ordinary and proper requirements of the Borough, even taking into consideration on extended scheme of sewerage; and that if additional sluice and scour valves and inspection sumps be provided, as found necessary, the water supply of the Borough will be placeJ upon a sound and satisfactory basis. "On these conclusions, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Ewington, seconded by Cr Pauling, that it be a recommendation to the Borough Council to adopt Scheme No. 1, outlined by Mr Laing-Meason in his report dated. March,, 1908, and appearing on page 7 thereof. "Cr Haughey dissented." Cr Hunter formally moved the adoption of the report. Cr Haughey took strong exception to the report as read, and said that the motion as reported carried, was not the motion that was put at all. He declared that the real motion was to the effect that the work at present in hand be completed, and any other work found necessary, and he accused members of the committee of putting their heads together and altering the resolution after it had been passed. Cr Hunter said Cr Haughey was quite in error in stating this, but Cr Haughey persisted that such was the case. The Mayor, after some discussion had ensued on this point, said the Council had ostensibly only the report of the committee before it, and he thought it was a very sensible one. The report was unanimously adopted, without discussion.
