A BIG FIRE.
| ENGINEERING WORKS DE- | STROYED. 350 MEN THROWN IDLE. Received June 2, 10.10 a.m. SIDNEY, June 2. The Meadowbank Manufacturing Company's railway carriage and genera 1 engineering works, on the banks of the Parramatta River, were destroyed by fire at three o'clock this morning. The works were one of the largest in the State, covering three acres. Owing to the distance from town, fire appliances were not available in time to save anything. The total loss is unknown, but the damage in the carriage sheds alone is estimated at £30,000. Three hundred and fifty men have been thrown idle. HEAVY STOCKS OF MATERIAL DESTROYED. Received June 2, 9.45 p.m. SYDNEY, June 2. The employers at Meadowbanks and a few volunteer firemen, assisted by a lucky change of the wind, succeeded in checking the fire after the main building had been consumed. Besides valuable machinery, heavy stocks of material and property were destroyed, including eight lavatory carriages, and a number of unfinished carriages, portions of big contracts the State Railways Company had in hand. The insurances total £28,000.
