DESPERATE BRAVERY. FRUITLESS NIGHT ATTACKS. \ CALCUTTA, May 22. In the fighting at Umrakilli the Mohmands lost 200 men. They exhibited desperate bravery. Several were bayoneted right in the British breastworks. The British advance was checked, thus encouraging the enemy to make fruitless night attacks. A PETITION TO THE AMEER. ißeceived May 24, 4.30 p.m. CALCUTTA, May 23. It is reported at Simla that the Mohmands and Khuda Khels have forwarded to the Ameer a petition to the effect that they attacked the British at the instance of the frontier officials who had now deserted them. Unless they were helped quickly they intended to transfer the country to Britain. The" Afrids have written to a leading mullah, stating that thev do not need any more mullahs to stir up trouble and then disavow rmd dessert them as in the case of the Mohmands.
