NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE CONFERENCE.

WELLINGTON, April 21. The National Defence League Conference opened to-day. Mr J. P. Firth was appointed Chairman and Mr R. Hackett, Secretary. In the annual report the Executive expressed themselves as satisfied that the public tone on the subject of compulsory training in New Zealand was decidedly healthy. The League would welcome a referendum on the subject. The membership of the League now stands at 6,600, of whom 4,149 are in the Auckland province. A great many districts have not yet been organised. Since its inception the League has received £863, and now has *56 in hand.
