MURRURUNDI RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

HOW IT OCCURRED. SUPPOSED MISTAKE IN SIGNALS. SYDNEY, April 18. In the train collision at Murrurundi the engines were badly smashed, and two carriages in each train were demolished. It is believed that the accident was caused through a mistake in the signals. Where the blunder actually occurred is unknown. The Glen Lines train was running late, owing to heavy holiday traffic, and was in the act of pulling on to a loop line to allow the Brisbane train to pass, when it was seen that a collision was imminent. Both drivers applied their brakes, but too late to avert the impact, which was heard a mile away. Debris from the smash was hurled a long distance. A buffer was found ten yards away. Soldiers ired their bayonets for freeing the injured caught amongst the splintered timbers. That none were killed is attributed to the fact that the soldiers and other passengers WJre mostly lying down or sleeping. Thoir recumbent bodies offered less resistance. After the first shock and excitement, the troop 3 displayed fine discipline. The injured are doing well.
