THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1908. THE SHOW SITE.
The business-like statement presented by the sub-committee of the Mastcrton Agricultural and Pastoi'al Association to the members of the General Committee on Saturday last, should convince those who are opposed to the change of site that the proposal proceeds upon right lines. There appears to be little beyond sentiment to support opposition. The drawbacks that appeared upon first sight have mostly vanished as the matter has been viewed in its proper perspective, and it is evident that in the ultimate the town, the district, and the Association will benefit by shifting the Show to the Solway grounds. The probable receipts have been placed at a lower estimate than they might reasonably have been, and the probable expenditure can hardly ba said to have been in any way minimised, and the prospective result works out satisfactorily. The original motion passed was that ninety acres be purchased, but it was subsequently found desirable to limit the area to seventy-five decided after the fullest deliberation that the extra fifteen acres were not really required, and if that is so it is wise not to incur the additional expenditure. Any profit reaped by the syndicate upon the sale of the fifteen acres is to be handed over to the Association. The whole position has yet to be submitted to a general meeting of members on the 28th inst, and until then nothing definite can be' done; hut if we may judge from the small amount of opposition shown to the proposal at Saturday's meeting, there is little reason to doubt that the assent of the subscribers will be given. The point to be
emphasised is that the members of
the committee, having the welfare of the institution, of Masterton, and of the breeders and farmers in the district at heart, and being men of experience, ability and integrity, must be credited with not only the best intention, but the best judgment, in the recommendation they have submitted for the approval of the Association.
