IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
ARMY AND NAVY ESTIMATES,
Received February 25, 10.13 p.m LONDON, February 25.
Owing to Mr R. B. Haldane, Chief Secretary of War, having withdrawn 185,000 men from the South cavalry regiments and four battalions of infantiy, there is a saving in the net army estimates of £301,000. The net naval estimate amounts to £32,319,500. Lord Tweedmouth's memorandum shows that the increase is due to dearer coal, food, and material. New construction accounts for £7,545,202, and provides for one improved Dreadnought, one large armoured cruiser, six fast protected cruisers, sixteen destroyers and some submarines. It is intended to proceed with the construction of the naval base at Rosyth. The Government has every intention of maintaining the standard hitherto deemed necessary for safeguarding National and Imperial interests.
A cablegram from London on February 6th stated that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Asquith) had objected *o Lord Tweedmouth's Naval Estimates on the ground that they were too high, and they were returned to the Admiralty for revision. ThD 130 Liberal members pledged to the reduction of armaments are pressing the Government to reduce its Estimates, though no motion on the subject has yet been tabled by them.
