WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at the County offices, Car r terttin, on Saturday, there being present —Crs Wm. Perry (chairman), G. Stevens), T. V. Moore, R. Barrel', D. Douglas, J. Strang, R. G. Welch and F. Court. The treasurer reported as follows:—Cr balance at Bank of New Zealand, £1,727, receipts since last meeting, £215 lis 3d. D»* Frengley, Chief Health Officer, interviewed the Council with reference to the salary of the Sanitary Inspector, and agreed that the Inspector's salary should be paid as before, the Council contributing a portion and the Health Department a portion for the Inspector's services in the Wairarapa district. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr Moore, it was decided that the ■offer be accepted. A complaint was received from Messrs Grace Bros, and R. Ccoper, who stated that the Gladstone —Admiral Road was being used as a "dumping ground" for timber, and that the timber on the roadside was becoming a sojrcc of danger to the travelling public. It was resolved to give the persons owning the timber twenty-four hours notice to remove it.
Mr J. B. Jury vrrr.te askirg the Council to metal a portion of the Ponatahi Road, near the Featherstcn end of the County. It was resolved • that tenders should be called for the work in September next. A letter was received from Mr W. P. Day, of Gladstone, asking the Council to put in a culvert on the road leading *.o his property. It was decided that the work should be put in hand immediately. Authority received from the Chief Engineer of Roads to spend grants on the Wharau—Kaiwhata, Waihakeke to Taumata, Gladstone to Wharau and Bismarck Roads. The Engineer was instructed to have the bridge on Bristol Road re- _ paired. Cr Moore moved —"That the contractor for putting in the drain on the East Taratahi Road be given authority to put pipes under the road so as to let the water off while the drain is being opened, providing that the neighbours in the vicinity do not object to take any responsibility in case of flood." The motion was carried. Accounts amounting to £1,48110s lid were passed for payment. ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The Engineer (Mr F. T. M. Kissel) reported inter alia, a? follows: — Belvedere Riding. only work beyond a few minor repairs in this riding has been the Manning's Road contract, which is now completed. Dalefield Riding.—General maialling repairs have been made on the Railway Road, Waterson's, Jarvois, and Mcfffat's Roads. The metalling on Swafmp Road ha 3 heen completed. The creek banks at Gallon's have been protected with stone work. The culvert on the Main Road south has been replaced wi h\concrete, by'clay work, and will Le opened for traffic again at the beginning of the week. Tenders have been called for metalling Taumata Road. Parkvale Riding.—Both metalling contracts at Kokotau have been completed. The contract on ' Somerset Read, which had been left over for two years on account of water, has now been completed, and it has been necessary to nut out considerably more than the original contract. The contractor is now going on with the contract on Carter's Road. I have measured the drain on East Taratahi Road which it is proposed to fill, and find that it will require about 810 cubic yards of filling to bring the road to the proper section. The contractor has made a start metalling on this road.
Maungaraki Riding.—The work on the Kaiwhata Road and in the Kaiwhata River has now been completed. Slow progress is being made with the metalling contract on the Flat Point Road. The contracts on Eringa Road and on Longbush Road have been completed, and repair work done on the Longbush Road. A considerable •amount of work has been carried out in the Maungaraki Hill, but so far I have been unable to get teams to go out. The scrub for the groyne at the Kokotau Bridge is being cut, and the groyne will be put in next week. I have taken a- section over the Maungaraki Hill on the KokotauLongbusb Road, with a view of regrudina as suggested by the Roads Denartment. The contractors for the bridge over the Korerau Creek, at Tupurupuru, have been making satisfactory progress, and expected to have the work finished on Friday, The votes for the Gladstone-Wharau Road, Bismarck Road, Te WharauKawhata Road, and WaikakekeTaumata Road have been handed over by the Roads Department to spend. I have gone over the roads mentioned with the Councillors in the district, and, with the exception of the Bismarck Road, decided on the most necessary work. To secure the possibility of getting the work through this summer, I have called tenders for the work. Tenders have also been called for metalling on Ponatahi Road.
