Reported Discovery of Gold.
NELSON EXCITED. NELSON, January 12. Some excitement was caused, yesterday, by a report that gold had b'een discovered on the mud flat abng the water front. It appears that a party of corpor-ation-labourers, who were laying the outfall sewhge main, found traces of gold in the excavations. They temporarily abandoned their work and made several "wash-ups," with encouraging results. The news quickly spread, and the discoverers were soon joined by several others. During the day the Commissioner of Crown Lands issued licenses for one or two claims, which were duly pegged out, the holder of one of the largest being a neighbouring M.P. A hoax is now suspected.
