A SAFEGUARD AGAINST AMERICAN TRUSTS.
LORD CROMER'S VIEW. Received January 12, 4.14 p.m. LONDON, January 11. Lord C"omer, speaking at Glasgow, claimed that free trade was a safeguard against the creation of huge American trusts. The adoption of protection or preference would stimulate anglo-phobia throughout the world. Free trade was the soundest basis of the Imperial policy. Socialists and extreme tariff reformers met in Australia on a common g-ound each entertaining the exaggerated belief that the States power was a remedy for economic evils.
