Prosecutor's cross - examination showed that Veltheim claimed to be the late Barney Barnato's political agent. '■ Prosecutor denied that Barnato had paid Veltheim £1,500. (In his evidence in chief the prosecutor testified that he first s;>.w ac--1 cused in the dock in Johannesburg in 1898, he being then tried in connection with witness' brother's death. Witness produced at the Johannesburg trial seven blackmailing letters. The ( handwriting was the same as that of a letter received in June, 1907, demanding money. The letter was followed by a draft for £16,000, presented through Dr Millar, of Antwerp. )
