| CRICKET. THE TEST MATCH. ENGLAND WIN BY ONE WICKET. KV TELEGRAPH - I'IIESS ASSOCIATION. Received January 7, 9.13 p.m. MELBOURNE, January 7. The weather was again hot, and the wicket good but dusty for the | continuation of the test match. The j Englishmen began the task of getting 123 runs to win with six wickets in hand. Noble opened to Hardstaff, Cotter bowling at the other end. Hardstaff \nade a fluky single, hooked Cotter to the skyward, and was easily taken by RaTisford. Rhodes, who followed, hit one smartly to leg, which MacAlister failed to hold. It was a somewhat difficult chance. At 184 Saunders replaced Noble, and shortly after Armstrong went on in place of Cotter. Braund then played cautiously at Armstrong's slow leg stuff, but the fifth bail clean bowled him after 1 hour 43 minutes' batting. Crawford joined Rhodes, and the second century went up after 4 hours 41 minutes' play. Gradually the score crept up, but 76 runs were btill required when Rhodes cut a ball from Saunders'and started to run. He :saw the hopelessness of the attempt, and tried to regain his crease. - He slipped, and Carter scattered his -wicket. Crawford with Barnes as his partner played merrily for a short time. - Then he gave an easy chance to Armstrong, which was accepted. Humphries' played a short time, and when the luncheon adjournment' was taken each batsman had seven to his credit, and 60 was requited to win. On resuming the txcitement became intense. A ball from Armstrong struck Humphries' pad, and he was given out lsg-before, amid a great shout. He had played a slow innings of 44 minutes, knocking up only 16 runs. Fielder joined Barnes with 39 runs still required. When 28 was wanted Noble took the ball from Saunders: at 260 Cotter replaced Armstrong. Seven runs were wanted when MacArtney went oh.' Fielder scored short runs, while Barnes played well, and scored the winning hit amid an outburst of enthusiasm, after playing for 50 minutes. England thus won by one wicket.
