Suspicious Fire And An Arrest.

WHANGAREI, January 3. A three-roomed cottage with the contents, at Kiripaka, was destroyed by fire at midnight, on Wednesday. A fami'y named Olsen living next door attended the fire and returned home to find money amounting to £l7O in notes and gold abstracted from a drawer during their absence. Yesterday evening the police arrested Nicholas Maddren, a son-in-law of Mrs Olsen, who was visiting the family. An amount corresponding to the sum stolen was found on him. Accused was charged at the Whangarei Police Court to-day, and remanded till Monday. The police are of the opinion that the fire was deliberately started to attract the attention of Olsen and family, and to provide an opportunity for the theft.
