DISTRICT COURT.

| MASTERTON—FRIDAY. \ ' Before His Honor Judge [Haselden. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Arthur J. Lindop, chemist, of Carterton, was charged with having unlawfully supplied certain medicine and an instrument knowing that they would be used for an illegal purpose. Accused pleaded not guilty. Mr B. J. Dolan prosecuted on behalf of the Crown. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the defence. Mr Pcwnall, at the outset, raised the preliminary objection that accused had only been committed on a charge of supplying an instrument. M** Dolan submitted that the depositions furnished*- sufficient information for the three counts. His Honor agreed with counsel for the Crown. The following jury was empanelled —Messrs R. J. King, foreman. A. Mason, W. J Beard, C. C. Aitken, W. Hamer, W. J. Bannin, G. B. Russell, J. Allen, G. Turley, J. G. Miiler, D. Geary, H. K. McPhee. The Crown Prosecutor narrated the circumstances which had led tothe prosecution, and stated that it was not contended that in effect had been produced, but that the offence was committed with intent. Evidence in support of counsel's opening remarks wa» given by George Hulley and Detective Rawle. Mr Pownall, for the defence, called William Henry West, of Young's Chemical Company; Henry Buchanan Willis, of Sharland and Co.; and William Leitham, of Kenipthome, Prosser and Co., who all stated that the majority of chemists stocked the instruments referred to in the charge. Accused in hia evidence denied that he had supplied the instrument to Hulley, but admitted having given Hulley medicine for a woman who, he said, was run down. Mr Pownall, in addressing the jury, contended that it was necessary to have evidence corroborative of that given by Hulley, and it was rather difficult to gather from the facts that accused had supplied the medicine or instrument with any improper intention. After his Honour had summed up the jury retired and half-an-hour later returned a verdict of not guilty. The accused was accordingly discharged, PROBATE GRANTED. On the application of Mr D. K. Logan, probate was granted in the estate of Wm. Baker, carter, deceased. DISCHARGES FROM BANKRUPTCY. , Several applications for discharges 'from bankruptcy were made. The application of W. H. Denby, J. W. Orbell and H. 0. Ramsden were granted unconditionally; that of G. C. L. Jenseti was refused, and that of W. H. Wilton adjourned for six months. An application by the D.O.A. for the Court to annul the bankruptcy of J. W. Mcßae, as bankrupt had paid 20s in the £. was granted. This closed the business of the Cour\
