THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
THE MAYOR AND CR. EWINGTON. A LIVELY PASSAGE-AT-ARMS. A brief but lively passage-at-arms occurred between Cr Ewington and the Mayor at last evening's meeting of the borough council, the subject under notice being the extension of drainage in the borough. Cr Ewington, in introducing the subjeci, said that in September last the council decided to take to place a proposal for extending the drainage before the ratepayers, but since then nothing had been done, and he wanted to know why? He had been long expecting the proposals to be put before the people, and he saw no reason for such a lengthy delay. The council had given explicit instructions, and why had they been ignored? The Mayor: Simply because I am not prepared to go on witn the matter. When lam prepared to take steps, I will go on with the proposal. Cr Ewington (warmly) : Are we going to wait on your laxity. 1, ,for one, don't feel inclined to wait until you are ready. We are not going to put up with it. If the council were to wait for you, goodness knows when the thing would be done. You'll have to do something, and that pretty soon. The Mayor: Who said so? Cr Ewington : You'll be forced. The Mayor: Who'll iorce me. Cr Ewington: We will. The Mayor: I've been going into the matter carefully, and I'll go on with it when I'm ready. Cr Ewington: Well, don't goto sleep over it. Take the initiative and do something. The subject was then allowed to drop as quickly as it had been brought up.
