Jennings and Claxton were not at home with Barnes and Blythe. Claxton played sterling cricket throughout. The innings closed for 343. Jones and Fane were first to represent England. For a time the batsmen took no liberties. Jones, however, soon got to work, cutting and driving in excellent style. When stumps were drawn for the day four wickets were down for 223.
