TELEPHONE REQUIREMENTS.
We notice that the fairly up-to-date telephone system in the cities is to be still further improved, and brought into line with that in vogue in the great cities of the United States. It is to be hoped the progressive movement
will not be limited to the cities. In many provincial towns the telephone service is antiquated and unsatisfactory. Masterton is. one of these towns. The double ring necessary to get in touch with an exchange subscriber is almost as old as the telephone itself, and came in with the instruments which are still made to do duty by a Department noted for its economy in the matter of public conveniences where the provinces are concerned. The provincial towns, however important, have more often than not to put up with the departmental casts-off of the city. If they cry out —well, the cry is from afar, and can be disregarded. We want an up-t? date telephone system in Masterton, and an up-to-date service. We want prompter responses to calls upon the exchange in order to render the service of real value, an:l we want instruments of the most modern design available in the dominion. Further, there should be a Sunday telephone service at least during portions of the day. An important progressive centre like Masterton ought to see that such a public convenience as the telephone bureau keeps pace , with its prosperity. .
