THE PRICE OF BREAD.
LEGISLATION PROMISED,
Mr J. F. Arnold (Dunedin South) asked the Premier, in the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, whether he had seen a statement made by a Dunedin baker that since the price of bread was raised to 7|d the 41b loaf, the falling-away in consumption had been enormous, already making a difference of a thousand loaves a week to his firm alon*; and, presuming that all other bakers are being affected in proportion, had the Government considered to what extent the poorer classes throughout the dominion are being deprived of the staff of life? If so, would they at once bring clown their proposed legislation dealing with the subject? The Premier replied—"Yes. The importance of the whole subject is fully recognised. As the honourable gentleman doubtless is aware,, the wheat market is abnormally high, and is the governing factor at present in the regrettably high prices that are/uling for bread. LegislaI tion as * promised by me will be | brought down at an early date."
