I Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., report:—We held our monthly sale of pvool, skins, hides and tallow yesterday, when we offered 12 bales wool, 60 bags wool, 2,500 sheepskins, 1,200 hides and a quantity of tallow, horsehair and rabbit skins. There was a good attendance of buyers, and bidding was keen at full market rates. We quote:—Wool—Crossbred 7d to Bd, crutchings, best 6d to 6£d, crutchings, inferior and - medium 4d to sfd, locks jid pieces 3£d to Skins— The raarket was steady, but last sale rates were hardly realised except for the best parcels. Other lots might be quoted at jd to £d down. We quote: —Fine crossbreds 8d to BJd, coarse crossbreds 7£d to Bd, dead skins 6Jd to 7|d, dead hoggets 6d to 6Jd, hogget skins 7d to 7|d, green skins 4s to 7s 4d. Tallow —In casks 24s 6d, in tins 21s fid, rough fat 15s 9d. Horsehair — Is to Is 4d per lb. Hides.—Hides sold at last sale rates, but competition was not strong owing to the bad condition of the hides offering. We would once again impress upon clients f;he necessity for more care in the saving of hides. The Wairarapa has the reputation of showing the worst hides of any district in the Dominion, and our experience unfortunately does not enable us to deny the impeachment. Almost every lot in the catalogues recently has had to be described as "cut," "dead," "slippy," "sloppy," "rateaten," or "rotten," and naturally the sales are depressed owing to the quantity of bad hides offering. Buyers do not want to be burdened with rubbish and under present conditions there is no inducement for outside buyers to come here to operate in hides as ihey can get so few lines of good hides. The matter is one entirely in the hands of growers. After the hides have been so neglected, we cannot condition them in our stores, and make them presentable; but if, when taken off the beast they are well salted and laid out, there would be none of the present trouble and loss, and the hide sales fcere would be well attended by ; \gutside buyers to the advantage of all concerned. We quote: —Ox hides 4£d to 4§d, cow 4d to 4fd, calf skins (best) 5d to 6d, calf skins (inferior) 2|d to 4|d, bull hides 2d to 3£d, cut and slippy hides Id tn 3d. Our next sale will be held on Wednesday, December 4 th.
