FAIRVIEW RIFLE RANGE.
NEW TARGETS TO BE ERECTED. k meeting of riflemen representing the Opaki and Fairview Rifle Clubs was held last evening to consider the question of arranging for the equipment of a suitable range for both clubs during the coming season. Mr W. J. Welch, captain of the Opaki Club, presided. The Chairman stated that at the recent meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle Association a motion in favour of holding the next shooting meeting of the Association in Masterton had been carried. In spite of this, however, it had been agreed to allow the next meeting to be held in Greytown, provided the balai.ce at present standing to the credit of t.e Association was not touched to -on the next meeting. Therefore some shooting enthusiasts in the Lower Valley had entered into a guarantee against loss at the next meeting, and had further agreed to give a donation of £lO to make the Fairview range a ten-target range, so that it would be suitable for holding the Rifle Association's matches on in future, in the event of the next meeting at Greytown not being a success. The question for the meeting to decide in was whether ten targets should be erected and he was inclined to think that this course should be adopted. Mr Cr. Hyde urged precaution in the matter. He would not advocate the erection of- ten targets on the Fairview Range until it was seen what was the result of this year's shooting. He thought that only four or five targets should be erected at present to allow of this season s trophy shooting being carried on, and if matters were then found to be satisractory extensions could then be proceeded with if _ necessary. He moved in that direction. Mr D, McGregor seconded the motion. Mr R. J. King said he was of opinion that it would be advisable t> go on with the work of erecting ten targets at once. He did not think there would be any difficulty in financing the extra work, as the Rifle Association had donated £lO, and a number of subscriptions had been promised. Mr W. J. Henry felt sure that the Wairarapa Association's meeting would not be a success at Greytown, and it behoved the meeting to go on with the work of erecting ten targets, more especially as ths Government did not seem to be acting in the direction of acquiring another range in the district. The probability of the Government acquiring land and equipping a range in the district was considered, and it was mentioned that if such a thing did come to pass the Association s meeting could be held on the new range, and the clubs could still hold their practices and trophy shooting on the Fairview range. After considerable discussion in which various opinions were expressed, the motion was carried. Myrtle Grove Cigaiettes are obtainable from all Masteiton ToLacconists."'
