ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Received October 23, 8.25 a.m. LONDON, October 22. Horace Rayner, who was sentenced to death for the murder of William Whiteley, the "Universal Provider," in January last, and whose sentence was afterwards commuted to imprisonment for life, attempted to commit suicide by opening an artery in his arm. The attempt, however, failed. AN INJUNCTION DEFIED. A LAW OFFICER IN TROUBLE. Received October 23, 7.45 a.m. NEW YORK, Octobir 22. Mr E. T. Young, Attorney-General of the State of Minnesota, in defiance of an injunction of the United States District Court at St. Paul, attempted to enforce under State law a reduction of railroad freights. Thereupon he was fined for contempt, but refused to pay the fine, and was remanded in custody. An appeal will be made to the United States Supreme Court. STATE MONOPOLY IN BRANDY. Received October 23, 8.25 a.m. BERLIN, October 22. The newspaper Berliner announces that a bill will shortly be introduced to establish a monopoly in brandy, yielding the State seventy million marks (rather over £3,420,000).
