Reports from India show that after a dry hot September the situation is fair or good in Burma, Eastern Bengal, Assam, a portion of Bengal central provinces, and a portion of Bombay and Madras, but west of Bengal the craps are suffeting, while the harvest on the north-west frontier and the Umta provinces is a failure. Distress is likely to be widespread and necessitating exten-" sive relief measures. Indications point to only a quarter of the crops being gathered in Central India.
