Received September 30, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, September 29. The wool sales are animated and the market is very firm. The follow • ing were the prices realised by the fleece portions of the clips named : Longburn, llfd; Mangahape, 113 d. The number of bales catalogued to date/in 40,579; sold, 38,980 bales. Frozen Mutton—Canterbury, light, 4Jd: medium, 4 l-16d; heavy, 3|d; North Island, 3|d; best brands.. 3£d. New Zealand Lamb—Canterbury, light, 5 5-16 d; medium, 5 3-16 d; rest unchanged. New Zealand Beef—Ox fores, 2id; ox hinds, 3 11-16 d. River Plate Sheep—Heavy, 3 l-16d; light, 3 3-16 d. River Plate beef —Ox fores, 2|d; ox hinds, 3 9-16 d. New Zealand Hemp Quiet. August-October shipment, £3l 15s. Rabbits Good demand. Large Victorian are selling at 12s 6d to 13s; Sydney, 13s to 14s. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, September 28th : Trade for all classes of mutton has been very slow; prices are barely maintained, and holders are firm. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. Canterbury mutton is quoted a,t 4£d and North Island at 3£d psr lb. The lamb market is firm. Demand is chiefly for light-weights, and there is no change in prices to report. The beef market is dull; offerings are very large and prices declining. Hindquarters are quoted at 3f d, forequarters at 2Jd per lb. The butter market is firm, and there are only small arrivals. Best Victorian makes have sold at about 113s, Danish 117s, Canadian 110s, arid Siberian 99s per cwt. The cheese market is quiet but firm, and New Zealand stock is exhausted. Canadian white make is quoted at 59s and coloured at (ils per cwt. The hemp market is quiet, with little doing, but good feeling prevails. There is no change in prices to report. The cocksfoot seed market is very firm, and a good demand continues. Bright clean 171b seed is quoted at 675. Wool sales are now proceeding, with large attendances and active competition. The following are the current quotations: - Merinos, 7| per cent, advance; scoured and fine crossbreds, all grades, 5 per cent, advance; coarse crossbreds, all grades, and medium crossbreds, all grades, remain unchanged.
