LAND AND INCOME TAX EE&L. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent). WELLINGTON, September 25. The House this evening farther considered the Land and Income Tax Bill. A great deal of discussion- arose over the clause providing that lessees shall be liable to graduated tax as if they were owners. The Premier explained that the clause had been devised to prevent evasion by fictitious subdivision of holdings, whereby the colony had lost £20,000 during the last couple of years. In his opinion, large leaseholders were as hurtful to a colony as large freeholdars, but the interests of the leaseholders were nevertheless well guarded. The debate throughout was of a. technical character. Clauses 9 to 14 of the Land Tax BML were passed as reported from -, the. Public Accounts Committee, anc! v progress was reported.
