DRAINAGE OF THE BOROUGH.

PROPOSED EXTENSION SCHEME.

CONSIDERATION BY THE COUNCIL.

The question of the drainage extension of the Borough was discussed at a special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last eveing. The Town Clerk said that the Council had already decided to place ! a scheme for re-draining the borough before the ratepayers for their approval. Cr J. C. Ewington considered that now that there was so much sickness and disease in the borough, the Council should at once place the matter before the ratepayers and ask them to sanction a Joan for the purpose. The Council had Dr. Frengley's word that the Health Department would assist in the matter. He moved that the Council's former resolution, deciding to place a scheme before the ratepayers, be given immediate effect to. Cr Pauling, in endorsing the last speaker's remarks, said he did not anticipate any opposition from those already connected with the drainage, as the new scheme would include the abandonment of the present sewage farm. If the ratepayers refused to sanction the loan, tne Health Department would have *o step in and do something. This, he thought, they | should do. I

Cr Prentice said the matter of money should not come into the question. It was a question of public health, and in his opinion the ratepayers would sanction the loan. The Mayor said that portions of the town certainly required to be drained. The Council should guide the ratepayers in this matter, and if they would not sanction a loan it was not the Council's fault. There was no doubt that a new drainage scheme had to come, if not now, in the near future.

Cr Haughey said that something definite should be put to the ratepayers. He did not think £BO,OOO was sufficient for the adequate drainage of the own because the water supply had to be extended hand-in-hand with the drainage. The Engineer stated that there was already a sufficient water supply in the streets to which it was proposed to extend the drainage. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried unanimously. Cr Haughey urged that before the matter was put before the ratepayers a definite scheme should be formulated, and if necessary, outside expert advice obtained. The Mayor replied that there was no money available at present for this purpose. He moved that, in placing the scheme before the ratepayers, a distinct understanding should be given them that before the work was proceeded with, outside expert advice would be obtained.

Cr Prentice seconded the motion, which was agreed to unanimously.

It was decided that a committee of the whole Council should be appointed to formulate a scheme and carry out the work.
