VALEDICTORY.
PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN MORTON. The Masterton n Rifle Volunteers entertained Captain Morton at a social in the Drill Hall, last evening, prior to his departure from Masterton to take up a position in Wellington. Lieutenant Brighting occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. The Chairman, in a eulogistic speech, referred to Captain Morton's long term of service in the Volunteerp, and the progress the corps had made since he ha"d been conne.tel with it. He was sure he was voicing the sentiments of all the members of the corps when he expressed the greatest regret at losing Captain Morton's services. Lieutenant Hosking spoke in a similar strain, and presented Captain Morton, on behalf of the corps, with a handsome silver-mounted oak tray. Captain Morton, suitably responded. He said he was sorry he had to leave them as his whole heart was in the corps, which he wished a very successful future. The toasts honoured during the evening were as follow:—"The King," The Chairman; "The Departing Captain, "Lieutenants Brighting and Hosking Captain Morton; "Rifle Clubs," Lieut. Brighting —Mr W. J. Welch, captain of the Opaki Rifle Club; "Masterton Mounted Rifles," Lieutenant Hosking Lieutenant Whittaker.
