BURGLARS SURPRISED. DESPERATE FIGHT. Received August 26, 9 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 26. Four detectives had a desperate fight with four suspected burglars at Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne, whom they surprised while unloading the proceeds of the recent robbery at a tobacconist's. The detectives used revolvers, and the suspects a revolver and empty bottles. Three of the suspects were captured, and one, who was wounded by a revolver shot, escaped. Tobacco valued at £240 was soized. LACROSSE. Received August 26, 9.58 a.m. PERTH, August 26. The Canadian lacrosse team defeated West Australia by 12 goals to 4. THE FEDERAL TARIFF. Received August 27, 1.1 a.m. SYDNEY, August 26. A large meeting of women adopted absolution emphatically protesting against the high duties placed on the necessaries of life. It was contended that the duties would compel many housekeepers, whose allowances could not be increased, to either.run into debt or use coarser food and shoddy clothing. It was decided to forward the resolution to Sir William Lyne, and also to ask the Lord Mayor to call a meeting protesting against high duties being placed on the necessaries of life.
