(By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, August 15.
The whole of the afternoon sittirgr. was occupied discussing the report of the Petitions Committee on petitions asking grants for works. The committee reported that they had no recommendation to make. A. few days ago the Premier plainly stated that he could not accept the recommendation of the committee wherepublic works were concerned as the Government must be responsible for the allocation of public funds, and the proper course for the petitioners, to take was to send their requests to the Minister for Puolic Works. The whole subject was again fought out, this afternoon, without altering the position. The House rose at 5 p.m. to enalfe members to attend the reception to W. Webb the champion sculler. EVENING SITTING.
The evening sitting was devoted to local Bills.
