A STRANGE STORY.
♦ NO SIGNS OF ANY TRAGEDY. By Telegraph —Press Association. • AUCKLAND, August 12. The policeman on duty at Ponsonby Station was informed at a quarter past ten last night by a man named Marshall that a young* couple h*.d fallen from a rock overhanging the water at Shelly Beach.§ He stated that while near the water at about ten o'clock he heard a splash followed by a girl's scream, and the cry: "Leo, don't; Leo, take me with you." Then he says he heard a second splash. Looking in the direction of the sound he saw ripples on the water as if they had been recently disturbed. Instead of going to the spot he ran to the police station to give "the alarm. Two constables, accompanied by Mr J. H. Upton, were soon on the scene, but after rowing round about two hours they found no signs of any tragedy. The police resumed the search this morn ■ ing.
