THE STRIKES AT BELFAST

Received August 12, 8.20 a.m. LONDON, August 11. Workman, Clark and Company, the Belfast shipbuilders, have temporarily discharged 2,000 hands, owing to their inability to obtain materials. An officer commanding a party of the Berkshire Regiment at Belfast received a wound from a bottle during a stoning incident. Sir Antony Macdonnell, UnderSecretary, has .gone to Belfast' TWO HOURS' DESPERATE FIGHTING. A CHILD KILLED. TWENTY POLICEMEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. Received August 12, 9.39 p.m. LONDON, August 12. Two hours' desperate fighting occurred at Belfast between a howling crowd and a strong force of police, cavalry and infantry. A child was killed and twenty policemen were seriously injured. The arrest of three hooligans led to a renewal of the mob's fury. Stones and broken bottles were thrown in Grosvenor Read, and, pandemonium reigning, reinforcements were summoned. Detachments of the Cameron Highlanders, Sussex and Essex Regiments marched to the scene. The cavalry dashed from one end to the other of the area of the disturbance. The crowds sullenly, but still throwing missiles, were forced into side streets towards strong military posts.

A pouring rain commenced to fall and the crowds dispersed.
