CARTERTON.

- Tuesday. The annual meeting of the Tara-tahi-Carterton Racing Club was held _jqu Saturday afternoon in the Car•"feerton Borough Council Chambers. Mr H. R. Bunny, President, was in the chair, and sixteen members were present. Speaking on the report and balance-sheet the Chairman expressed satisfaction at the financial position the Club was in. He expressed regret that Mr G. Tully, their judge, had found it necessary to resign, and referred to the capable manner in which he had carried out his duties. The report and balancesheet was adopted on the motion of Mr J. Hodder. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Mi- W. C. Buchanan; President, Mr H. R. Bunny; Vice-Presidents, Messrs H. Morison, and H. Judd; Auditors, Messrs J. Moncrieff, jnr., and R. J. Chapman; Judge, Mr R. G. Kemble; Timekeeper, Mr W. H. Franks; Honorary Surgeons, Drs. Bey, Johnston, and McCarthy; Clerk of Scales, Mr H. McPhee; Honorary Treasurer, Mr G. W. Deller; Stewards, Messrs J. M. Lightfoot. H. H. Wolters, T. Ray, L. Nix, T. P. Firman, Geo. Eaton, A. Daysh, W. H. Franks, W. J. Denbee, H. A. Bunny, J. G. Oates and J. Hodder.. It was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Deller, that Mr Tuliy should be thanked for his services to the Club as Judge. On the motion of Mr Nix, seconded by Mr Wolters, it was resolved that the Secretary should not issue free tickets to members whose previous year's subscription had not been paid. It was decided that the Stewards should meet at 2 p.m. on the third Saturday in each month. The appearance of the comet is creating some interest and several local residents have been astir in the early hours of the morning to get a glimpse of the phenomenon. At the band-room, on Monday evening, a pleasant function took place, when Mr J. Gillies, who is shortly to join the ranks of the benedicts, was presented by his fellow bandsmen with a dinner service. Mr H. Madsen, secretary of the Band, made the presentation, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the services Mr Gillies had rendered to the Band. Mr Gillies suitably acknowledged the gift. The Rev. Mr Ronaldson, wi,o some years ago was missionary in charge of the Carterton district, is expected" to arrive here this week, -and will preach at St. Mark's Church on Sunday evening next.
