A SCOW WRECKED.
FOUR MEN DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 23. A telegram from Tairua states that a messenger from Ohui has just ridden over and reported that the scow Surprise went ashore on the rocks about a mile from the north end of the Ohui Beach, and is a total wreck. The captain, mate and two seamen are supposed to be drowned. A fifth hand got ashore, and found his way to Ohui, where he is being well looked after. He is badly knocked about and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. His name is Harry Jackson. From what can be gathered from his account the scow dragged her anchor right from Slipper Island, and went ashore on the coast early on Sunday morning. The members of the crew were as follows:—J. T. Jalliere (skipper), vvhu was taken on in place of R. W. ClifFc. who was sick when the vessel was 1 .st here; H. W. Jackson, aged 20, rf Norfolk Island; A. Stewart, agecil9; E. Johansen, aged 19; W. Ke' y, aged 17. The last two member j of the crew were signed on wi in the vessel was here last month, ar.d the above list comprised the crew at the time she left this port.
