BOUNTIES TO DEVELOP INDUSTRIES.
[ Received. July 17, 10.8 a.m. | . MELBOURNE, July 17. A Bounties Bill has been introduced :into.the Federal House. It provides : for.a total expenditure of £530,000, spread over fifteen years. Bounties will! be payable to growers and producers only, and the employment of white labour is required. Articles for which bounties will be ,paid are cotton, flax, hemp, mohair, dried fruits, coffee s tubacco, rubber, .rice, preserved fish, combed wool, ■oil, materials from copra, cotton, seed, .linseed, sunflower seed, peanuts, oHves, and palm fruit. The Quarantine Bill has been read a-second time in the House.

Improved weather conditions since Friday have given Webb, the New Zealand sculler, and Charl&g Towns, who early next month will raw for the championship of the world, a chance of putting in better wark, Webb, working alone, doesoj;£ epm daily. Evidently the visitor is picking up his steering- marks. His methods of training differ from those of local scullers, but his present form indicates that he knows what amount of work is required to keep him in good nick. Report credits him with doing a fairly fast trial on Sunday.

Received July 17, 9.43 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 17. Mr Deakin, the Federal Premier, has been medically advised that it is necessary for him to absolutely cease work for at least a month.
MAIL COACH DESTROYED,
Received July 18, 12.2.7 a.m. SYDNEY, July 17. The mail coach at Bourke was caught in a thunderstorm and the mailman unyoked his horses and sought shelter. On returning he found the coach completely destroyed ?ncl the mails burned.
MAHUTA SCRATCHED.
Received July 18, 12.27 a.m. SYDNEY, July 17. The New Zealand horse Mahuta has been scratched for the Epsom Handicap and Metropolitan Handicap.
