THE EXPLOSION ON THE GEORGIA.
A CHARGE OF TWO HUNDRED POUNDS IGNITES.
Received July 17, 8.24 a.m. NEW YORK,.JuIy 16. Details of the explosion on the battleship Georgia show that .while: a charge of 200 pounds of powder was being lifted from the .hoist two seamen noticed the cover .smouldering. They shouted a warning and threw themselves on the floor. A terrific burst of flame and the turret was filled with smoke and noxious gases. A number of men tried .to.escape through the hatchway. Some.gained the deck and jumped i.nteihe sea. The chaplain of the .warship was the first to enter the turret Two more deaths of injured men (making in all seven deaths).are reported, and six others sec in.aprecarious state.
