THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.

By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N., June 19. The Hon. R. McNab addressed a large gathering at the Dairy Conference on the work being done by the i Department of Agrculture in connection with dairying matters. He intimated that Cabinet has entrusted him with the whole matter of milk •inspection all over the colony, but that in view of the fact that the whole community would reap the benefit no special tax Would be levied, but the cost estimated at £12,000 per year would be borne by the consolidated fund. He also stated that it had been decided to send experts Home to watch over New Zealand produce. j By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 19. Mr Wesley Spragg, managing director of the New Zealand Dairy Association, in a circular letter, says: "While considering the published demands of the Canterbury Employees' Union and the prospects of a similar union being formed in our own districts, we have thought that the hurtful operations of such unions may be greatly reduced by dairy companiesjidopting the contract system instead of the present wages plan. This system will, we think, be more useful irt the case of companies which have a number of contributing creameries. Creamery work where one, or at most two. persons are employed, especially lends itself to being done by contract. Some of the more definite operations of a butter factory may also be specified so as to be let on contract. The advantage of this would be that all work so let would be outside the influence of industrial Unions. The labour laws would not touch this manner of conducting the business provided bona fide contracts for specifiedjwork were entered into. Contracts would require to be in contradistinction to an arrangement for piece work. This latter comes under the jurisdiction oC the Arbitration Court.
