A special meeting of the Federal Cabinet considered a cablegram from Mr Deakin, Prime Minister, regarding mail matters. The steel barque Eagle Crag, 1,450 tons gross, on her voyage from Liverpool, narrowly escaped destruction by fire, which was started by a lamp being upset in the sail locker on April 13th. The fire spread with alarming rapidity, but holes were cut in the deck and the water poured in finally extinguished the flames. THE MELBOURNE MURDER. * Received June 11, 10.50 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 11. After Mr Bauer was murdered in his office in Collins Street, Mr Cutler, a jeweller of Little Collins Street, informed the police that a few days ago a man called at his shop and enquired as to Mr Bauer's address. Mr Cutler's descripiton of the man corresponded with that of a wellknown Victorian criminal. Suspicion points to the probability that the fugitive has gone to Sydney. This idea fits in with a story that a man was seen to leave the building in a violent hurry a few minutes after 5 p.m. It is said that he hailed a cab, and told the driver to drive fast to the Spencer Street railway station. The Sydney express left at 5.5 p.m.
