S. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
"THE CRUCIFIXION." The cantata, "The Crucifixion," | was rendered in S. Matthew's Church, last evening, when there was l a large audience present. "The Crucifixion" is a meditation on the sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer, for two solo voices, tenor; and bass, and, choruses, and interspersed with hymns to be sung by the congregation. The tenor solos were taken by Mr W. S. Jago, who rendered them with taste and feeling, the part being particularly suited to his sympathetic voice. His best number perhaps was "The Majesty of the Divine Humiliation," in which he was heard to advantage. Mr F. J. Hunn made the most of the bass part of the cantata, his fine voice having ample scope in the various numbers. The duet, "So Thou Liftest Thy Divine Petition," by Messrs Hunn and Jago was one of the best items, and was gusung with nice expression and due regard to light and shade. Mesdames Raw son and Jago were associated with Messrs Hunn and Jago in the quartette, "God So Loved the World," their voices blending nicely and keeping well in tune. The choir of S. Matthew's rendered valuable assistance in the choruses, and the congregation joined heartily in the incidental hymns. Mrs F. J. Hunn presided at the organ, and contributed materially to the success of the rendering of the cantata. Unfortunately during the organ | march, "Processional to Calvary," I the water gave out, and somewhat j upset the choir and militated against ia" good attack in the following i chorus, "Fling Wide the Gates."
