A number£of cane-growers, discouraged by their inability to secure suitable labour, talk about emigrating from Northern Queensland rather than allow their canefields to be filled with the scum from Australian cities. VESSEL ON A REEF. Received March 27, 1.18 a.m. BRISBANE, March 26. The Tsinar is still on the reef, and is being lightened in calm weather. She is apparently uninjured. TROTTERS' CHAMPIONSHIP. Received March 27, 1.18 a.m. SYDNEY, March 26. Ribbonwood has won the .trotters' championship. THE ENTOMBED MINER. Received March 26, 10.15 a.m. PERTH, March 26. Hughes, the miner who, as a diver, I assisted in the ©Derations for the re- , lief of Varischetti, who is imprisoned j by water in the workings of this Westralia East mine, has again visited Varischetti The latter maintains good health. Hughes' first appearance struck terror into the prisoner. Letters.from Varischetti's brother have been conveyed to him. The diver encountered many difficulties. He had a couple of narrow | escapes, losing the weights from his feet on two occasions, which made it difficult for him to keep upright. At one point the passage is so narrow 1 that Hughes had to wriggle through. AUSTRALIAN RACING. Received March 27, 1.18 a.m. SYDNEY, March 26. So far there is little straight-out wagering on the Doncaster Handicap and Cup. No transactions of any note are worth recording. MILITARY COMPETITIONS. Received March 27, 1.10 a.m. k SYDNEY, March 26. When the Prince of Wales accepted the Honorary Colonelcy of the Light Horse Regiments of Australia he presented a hundred guinea silver cup for competition in section drill, riding and shooting. At tjie same time Major - General Hut tori presented a fifty guinea shield for a Similar purpose. New South Wales has secured both prizes, Stfuth Australia and Westralia being second and third,, respectively, in each competition. SYDNEY AGRICULTURAL SHOW. Received March 27, 1.10 a.m. SYDNEY, March 26. The Agricultural Show, to-day, was one of the' finest pver held in Sydney. There were 5,300 competitive exhibitors. The farm produce display eclipsed all past Shows. Sir Foote won the championship in thoroughbred stallions, but having held it two years the.prize passed to Projectile, 'who also wpn a special prize.' . NEW ZEALAND PRIZEWINNERS.' Received March 27, 1.18 a.m. SYDNEY, March 26. At the Show, to-day, Mr Johns, of •Canterbury, obtained a first and two sfecondS in English Leicesters. Mr Nixon, of Canterbury, secured three firsts and two seconds' and the championship in ewes. In border Leicesters Mr Nixon secured three firsts and champion and one second, and Mr Johns obtained a first prize and champion for ewe and three seconds. In 1 Southdowns Mr Johns secured, one second prize.
