FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION.

CHRISTCHURCH. March 21. The bi-ennial competitions, under the auspices of the United Fire Brigades' Association, were continued, to-day, on the Exhibition Sports Ground. The attendance of the public in the afternoon was most disappointing. On account of the halfholiday, a large crowd was expected. All the morning was occupied with the hose, hydrant and union event, and it is anticipated that matters will have to be hurried considerably to bring the competitions to a close to-morrow evening. The results of to-day's work are as follow: v Hose, Hydrant and Union for Three Men.—The following teams competed in the order named:—Marton, 39 4-5 sec, including lsec penalty; Carterton, 43 3-ssec; Hokitika, 40sec; Waihi, 37 2-ssec; Oamaru, 43 l-ssec; Gisborne, 46sec, including 3sec penalty; Hastings, 37 l-ssec; Stratford, 38 4-ssec; Westport, 40 4-s&ec; Palmerston N., 39 4-ssec, including lsec penalty; Wanganui, 37 2-ssec, including lsec penalty; Lyttelton, 36sec; Masterton, 39 2-ssec, including lsec penalty; Fitzroy, 39 2-ssec, including lsec penalty; Auckland, 40 4-ssec, including 6sec penalty; Timaru, 39 2-ssec, including lsec penalty; Hawera, 37 2-ssec, including lsec penalty; Caversham, 34 3ssec; Grey Lynn, 35 3-ssec, including 2sec penalty; Eastown Railway, 35 l-ssec, including lsec penalty; Napier, 35 l-ssec. Also started—Waipawa, Eden Terrace, Clyde, Invercargill Railway, Mount Eden, Rangiora, Timaru Railway, Newmarket, Patea, Feilding, Whangarei, New Plymouth, Roslyn, Devonport, Petone Railway, Auckland Railway, Invercargill, Greymouth, Addington Railway, South Dunedin, Cambridge, Spit, Dunedin Railway, Onehunga, Dannevirke, St. Kilda, Port Chalmers, Gore, Naseby, Christchurch, Richmond, Napier Railway, Geraldine, Nelson, Sumner, Alexandra, Dunedin City, Akaroa, Hillside Railway, Christchurch Railway. Parnell, Woodville, Petone, Kumara, Lawrence, Ross, Hamilton. The remaining teams will run off tomorrow. ' j Rescue Event.—Reef ton, 23 4-ssec, ]; Hastings, 25 3-ssec, 2; Greymouth, 26sec, 3. Waihi and Stratford tied for fourth place at 26 3-5 sec, and will run off to-morrow morning. Special Ambulance Event.—Christchurch 1, Dunedin Railway 2, Gisborne 3. Five teams competed. Alarm and Disabled Hose for Five Men (this event remains to be completed to-morrow).—Timaru, 64 2-5 sec; Westport, 69sec, including 2sec penalty; Hawera, 71sec, including Bsec penalty. Also competed—Gore, Masterton, Stratford, Dunedin Railway. In the Ladder Race for One Man, yesterday, owing to a secretarial error Hokitika was awarded fourth place and Grey Lynn fifth. As the outcome .of a protest the positions have been reversed, Grey Lynn taking fourth prize.
