THE ACCIDENT ON THE SURREY.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 6. The Coroner opened an enquiry, today, into the circumstances surrounding the death of James Bafrd, a wharf lumper, aged about 29 years, who was killed last evening through falling down No. 3 hold of the steamer Surrey while placing the hatch covers in position.. According to the stevedore the catches at the ends of the fore and afterjbeams which support the hatch covers are hardly long enough for safety, and the blows of the men working at the adjoining hatch-way unshipped the beam, which fell into the hold, carrying the covers and the deceased with it. The accident would not have happened had there been proper bits fore and after. The Inspector of Machinery, who made an examination of the hatchway, said the fore and afters were not in their right places. He had never seen ®a ship so destitute of markings. No workmen could in this cases see the numbers on the fore and afters. The inquiry stands adjourned.
