THE METHODIST CONFERENCE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 6. A long discussion took place at the Methodist Conference, to-night, on the motion proposed by the Rev. S. Lawry, "That subject to a satisfactory report being presented by the committee the general conference be recommended to make provision foJ giving to the annual; conference of New Zealand an independent constitution with full powers of legislation and control of' its connexional funds under the name of the Methodist Church of New Zealand." Rev. H. Bull moved an amendment that the time was inopportune for separation. After a prolonged discussion the amendment was rejected by 73 votes to 74. The conference, by 78 votes to 69, then adopted a motion that in view of the smallness of the majority it was not expedient to proceed further with the matter.
