TRENTHAM RIFLE MEETING.
CAMERON (OPAKI) LEADING . IN THE AGGREGATES.
By Telegraph—Press Association. TRENTHAM RANGE, Last Night. Shooting on the Trentham Range began at 8 o'clock this .morning, and closed about 5.30 p.m. During that time tha 700 yds (final range) of the Wellington Match was concluded. The 800 yards and 900 yards of the Canterbury Match (800, 900 and 1,000 yards, 7 shots) were disposed of, and the 500 yards of the Nelson Match (500, 600 and 700 yards, 7 shots) was fired. The weather was fine throughout, but the light, steady rear wind which favoured the early morning competitors became stronger and more fitful as the day wore on, and was very disconcerting, varying from seven degrees left rear to seven degrees right rear. As a result there was little brilliant marksmanship, though some of the men put up very good scores. To expedite business two matches were fired simultaneously, half the riflemen taking one range, and the other half another range, each section interchanging on completion of their respective ranges. This is a very advantageous system, so far as expedition is concerned. At the 700 yards, Wellington Match (10 shots) A. Crimp, of Green Island, put up top score, one short of the possible; his | second last shot was four. He, how-1 ever, only got fourth place in the prize list, Lester, of Christchurch, and Frank, of Nelson, securing first and second place, with an aggregate of 90 each, and Handley, Wanganui, ; third place with 88. i , The following is the prize list in l the Wellington Match (600 yards and 700 yards, 10 shots): —Lester, Christchurch, 90; Frank, Nelson, 90; Handiey, Wanganui, 88; A. There were several 33's, but otherwise the scoring at this range was low, as also at the 900 yards, 29 being top score, put up by McCalley, New South Wales, Frank, Nelson, and Martin, Eketahuna. Mills, Dunedin, and Dewar, Oamaru, got 23 each. The highest score at the two ranges was made by Mills, who put 63 on his card, followed by McCalley 62, Dewar 61, Frank, Nelson, Marenzi, Eketahuna, and Martin, Flag Swamp, 60 each. One card showed misses at every shot at both ranges. The 1,000 yards range will be fired to-morrow.
In the Nelson Match (500, 600 and 700 yards) the firing at the shorter range did not produce anything higher than 33, the men reaching this score being—Welch, Opaki, Domigan, Feilding Wellwoode, Hawke's Bay, R. J. King, Opaki. There were seventeen 32's. The other ranges will be taken to-mor-row. Ballinger, at 700 yards, and Marenzi.rat 800 yards, had hard luck. The former put up, eight bulls and a four with a miss in between, and the latter missing his first shot followed on with six bulls. It is not intended to send a team to Bisley this year, but' the Government is said to be giving favourable consideration to a proposal that a team of 20 men shall go to Melbourne to meet a team of English riflemen who are to visit Australia next October. Williams, of Opawa, while leaving the range on his bicycle tonight, collided with a cart and sustained a broken arm. Dr. McNight, of Maniototo, attended the sufferer, and sent him into the Wellington Hospital. In the two ranges of the Canterbury Match Mills, Dunedin, was top scorer with 63.
