MAURICEVILLE

(From Our Own Correspondent). £ The Mauriceville School picnic is to take place on February 22nd. Subscriptions for the picnic already amount to £4, though the children have had only one week to see their friends about contributions. There will be plenty of toys to compete for. The assemblage of the youngsters will take place at the school about 10.30 a.m. From there they will march to the Horseshoe-bend paddock. A shooting match for a trophy took place on Saturday at the local butts. The principal results were as follow:—Mr C. Blewett, 90 points; Mr R. F. Wilton (captain), 84 points; Mr A. Dagg, 84 points; Mr M. Ross, 82 points. There were 11 competitors. A householders' meeting to consider the erection of a public hall took place in the Mission Hall, on Saturday. Mr F. Kummer occupied the chair. There was a moderate attendance, but an enthusiastic one. The sum of £lls was subscribed towards the purpose. The following sub-committee was appointed to canvass for more funds:- Messrs F. Kummer, C. Hoffeins, M. Mackenzie, C. Brooks and M. Ross. Some of the parents of school children here are under the impression that there are cases of whooping cough among the children attending this school. I wish to reassure them. There is no case of whooping cough anywhere here; though there is one case of very severe cold. The local teacher, himself a qualified man, has obtained the assurance of professional medical gentlemen that the fear of parents is groundless. Moreover, he is too anxious for the welfare of the little ones entrusted to his care, not to exercise the greatest watchfulness on their behalf. Messrs Jensen and Jorgensen, who had a very fine hay harvest some weeks ago, were able to get a second harvest last week of red clover, and the yield was excellent. The lime kilns are expanding by degrees under the able management of Mr G. Dryden. The store house has been lately enlarged to more than twice its former size, and other improvements are said to be in contemplation.
