MASTERTON TRUST LANDS TRUST.

The monthly 'meeting of the Trust Xands Trust was held last evening. Mr C. E. Daniell occupied the chair, and Messrs Feist, Wagg and Michell were also present.' The Treasurer reported a dr. balance pf £36 3s sd. / A letter was received from the Secretary, of the Wellington Harbour Board forwarding deed of agreement for signature by the Trustees. It was resolved that the deed be signed. The Town Clerk wrote,, asking for an immediate settlement of the award (£75) under the Betterment Act for the widening of Bannister Street. It was resolved that a deputation consisting, of Messrs Daniell, Michell and Wagg should wait on the Borough Council at their meeting, on 'Tuesday next, with reference to the matter. An application for a grant from the Mount Holdsworth Track Committee was till the next meeting. Messrs Bunny and Dolan forwarded assignments and sub-lease for the •consent of the Trustees. The Chair- > man was authorised to sign the documents on behalf of the Trustees. The following letter was received from Mr W. H. Jackson, headmaster •of > the Masterton District itigh School' / "In reply to your inquiry I have the honour to. supply you with the following information regarding the successes of the pupils at this school, in the recent Matriculation, Civil Service, and Scholarships examinations. Matriculation examination Four .pupils passed this examination with -credit ; that is, in addition to Matriculation, all four obtained a pass in the Solicitors' General Knowledge ■examination on their Matriculation work. These pupils are now qualified to enter the University. Civil Service Junior Examination — Thirteen pupils were successful in this examination, and all were placed in the ' -credit list. One of these scholars has been offered a civil service appointment at £65 per year. He, however, prefers to continue his studies and enter the University "when he has matriculated. He is an 'intelligent boy, and will come to the front later on. National Scholarships (junior examination)— Five "pupils qualified jn this examination. All-of these are remaining at this school for their secondary education. National Scholarships (senior examination)— Ten s>u,pils entered for this •examination, snd all qualified. This •entitles them to free secondary ■education until theyi are nineteen yehrs of age. In addition to this, two have been awarded scholarships of £5 a year, or £4O a year if they have to live away from home. One of these, a boy under fifteen years of age, has matriculated also. He desires to study for the Law, but is a year too young to enter the University. I have applied to the Education Board to allow his scholarship to commence next year. If the Board * will consent to this I intend to ask the Trust Lands Trust to grant him a subsidiary scholarship, say ' £25 a year. This boy possesses good intellectual capacity, and is deserving of assistance. His mother is a widow and not in a position to assist the boy to go through® a University , course. Two years ago, I made a recommendation to the Trust, that the Trust's Scholarship Fund should be used to assist scholars who matriculate to enter the University. Wagg seconded, that a letter be forwarded to the headmaster of • the Mas- \ terton District High School (Mr W. H. Jackson) . expressing great satisfaction at the splendid results of the examinations. A resolution was passed that the Trustees will be prepared to grant ' "subsidiary scholarships to the extent * amount of £lO each to all scholars who , having matriculated, wish/ to prosecute their studies at the University. It was resolved that a new fence y be erected at the back of the Trust section in Bannister Street. Leave of absence was granted tijl the end of May to the Chairman (Mr C. E.
