CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 2. The return match between Canterbury and the Marylebone Cricket Club's English team was commenced at Lancaster Park, this afternoon, when the weather was beautifully fine and there was a good attendance. A capital wicket had been provided, and no rain having fallen of late caused the outfield to be exceptionally fast, all the conditions being favourable to the batsmen. The Englishmen won the toss, and elected to bat. The scoring was slow at the start, and the first over only produced five singles. The best stand was made by Branston, who,, after compiling 119, was caught in the slips by Lusk off Patrick. He batted for two hours and gave no chances, and his score included one 5, seventeen 4's, and four 3's. The inning closed at 5.35 p.m. for 305. The Canterbury fielding was very good, but the bowling did not appear to trouble the batsmen much. Canterbury commenced their first innings shortly before 6 o'clock, but when time was called the score was 11 for no wickets. The game will be continued at 11.30 a.m. on Monday.
